NEW CLASS!

Oil Painting Atelier Program - Jill Banks

This course is designed for the intermediate to advanced painter interested in exploring individual projects in a supportive, mentoring environment. I’m bringing some of the benefits/practical knowledge gained from sharing studio space for many years with other professional artists and building my own studio practice to the atelier student. Each student will move at their own pace and work on projects of their choice. If you are interested in still life painting, we’ll address choosing objects and setting up pleasing compositions. Interested in painting portraits or people? Collaborate with other artists in the class to hire models, choose poses, clothing, etc. Working from photos? We’ll discuss overcoming pitfalls, manipulating photos in Photoshop Elements, cropping, resizing, etc. Even how to take better photos to use as sources.

I will be working to put you in charge of what you paint. While I may set up a still life or two (with students’ help) for some of the classes, come to each class with something you want to paint. If you would like to discuss this in advance of the first class, please email (preferred) or phone me.

Instruction on color mixing, design, paint handling, et al will be given as needed, but more emphasis will be placed on choosing the artwork you’d like to do and crafting an approach that will allow you to grow as an artist and create a growing portfolio of work.

While this is only an eight-week class, this course is designed to be continued throughout the year so that students can grow together as a group.

Topics addressed depend upon participants’ interests but are likely to include setting up/designing still life compositions, posing models, professional advice, the portrait painting process. Plus practical issues like stretching canvases, buying supplies, choosing materials, framing, varnishing, submissions for contests, how to keep inspired, etc.

Brown bag lunch discussions to include talking about art and artists, conducting individual and group critiques, local exhibits, how to prepare for an exhibit, etc.

Questions? Email me.

NEW CLASS!

Drawing 101 Jill Banks

For beginners only. Learn mark-making, drawing contours, building form, indicating light/shadow and perspective using the simplest of materials … pencils (and maybe charcoal) plus paper. The building block to learning how to draw is learning how to observe. You’re going to learn to see in a whole new way!

Drawing is just one more wonderful way to communicate. A new language. With a pencil in your hand, and something (anything) to capture, you’ll have built-in hours of entertainment and enjoyment wherever you go. I drew this nutcracker sitting in my son’s room waiting for him to recover from surgery. It was a whole lot better than watching golf!

Sketch the other diners in a cafe on those paper tablecloths. That must be why they put them there.

Doodle during a dull meeting.

Bring a sense of humor and the courage to build a new skill set in a comfortable, fun environment. Questions? Email me.
