Oil Painting Atelier Program - Jill Banks

Contact: Jill Banks

703-403-7435

jillbanks1@aol.com

www.jillbanks.com and www.jillbanks.blogspot.com

This course is designed for the intermediate to advanced painter interested in exploring individual projects in a supportive, mentoring environment. I’m bringing some of the benefits/practical knowledge gained from sharing studio space for many years with other professional artists and building my own studio practice to the atelier student. Each student will move at their own pace and work on projects of their choice. If you are interested in still life painting, we’ll address choosing objects and setting up pleasing compositions. Interested in painting portraits or people? Collaborate with other artists in the class to hire models, choose poses, clothing, etc. Working from photos? We’ll discuss overcoming pitfalls, manipulating photos in Photoshop Elements, cropping, resizing, etc. Even how to take better photos to use as sources.

I will be working to put you in charge of what you paint. While I may set up a still life or two (with students’ help) for some of the classes, come to each class with something you want to paint. If you would like to discuss this in advance of the first class, please email (preferred) or phone me.

Instruction on color mixing, design, paint handling, et al will be given as needed, but more emphasis will be placed on choosing the artwork you’d like to do and crafting an approach that will allow you to grow as an artist and create a growing portfolio of work.

While this is only an eight-week class, this course is designed to be continued throughout the year so that students can grow together as a group.

Topics addressed depend upon participants’ interests but are likely to include setting up/designing still life compositions, posing models, professional advice, the portrait painting process. Plus practical issues like stretching canvases, buying supplies, choosing materials, framing, varnishing, submissions for contests, how to keep inspired, etc.

Brown bag lunch discussions to include talking about art and artists, conducting individual and group critiques, local exhibits, how to prepare for an exhibit, etc.

Questions? Email me.

A revised supply list will be posted shortly. Here is the supply list.

Drawing 101 Jill Banks

Contact: Jill Banks

703-403-7435

jillbanks1@aol.com

www.jillbanks.com and www.jillbanks.blogspot.com

For beginners only. Learn mark-making, drawing contours, building form, indicating light/shadow and perspective using the simplest of materials … pencils (and maybe charcoal) plus paper. The building block to learning how to draw is learning how to observe. You’re going to learn to see in a whole new way!

Drawing is just one more wonderful way to communicate. A new language. With a pencil in your hand, and something (anything) to capture, you’ll have built-in hours of entertainment and enjoyment wherever you go. I drew this nutcracker sitting in my son’s room waiting for him to recover from surgery. It was a whole lot better than watching golf! (For me.)

Sketch the other diners in a cafe on those paper tablecloths.

Doodle during a dull meeting.

Bring a sense of humor and the courage to build a new skill set in a comfortable, fun environment. Questions? Email me.

Transitioning from Drawing into Painting Using Indirect PaintingMichela Mansuino

Contact: Michela Mansuino

571-263-7696

michelamansuino@yahoo.com

Painting realism is 95% about form and 5% about color.  This course will take you through a journey much the same way a drawing is turned into a painting.  In other words, a form is turned into a painted color image.  Lighting the subject will be our main concern as we will be starting with a session on photographing the subject.  Then we will be turning our subject into a composition, tweaking the image in Photoshop or iPhoto is next, to separate the values into something we can understand, projecting the image onto the canvas (which lines do I trace?), mixing up the local colors in the five value ranges necessary to turn the form in space, and layering the paint from thick to veiled glazes using medium.  Learn what tools and techniques you will need to make a convincingly real image, using photographs and/or a laptop.  We will be using ourselves as models and the self portrait as our theme.  Come to the first class wearing what you want in your self portrait, considering color and hairstyle for just the head and shoulders, i.e. tie, neckline, hair accessories. Supply list emailed upon registration.

Mondays, Apr. 12-Jun. 7, 3:30-6:45pm, 9 sessions

Discover the limitless possibilities of working with metal clay.  Made in Metal I will introduce the low firing formulation of PMC3 (Precious Metal Clay) and explore its properties.  Learn to cut, form, texture, paste, set stones, refine, fire and polish your fine silver designs into beautiful jewelry.  Projects may include earrings, bracelet, pendants and a ring.  Metal clay is a clay-like medium used to make jewelry, beads and small sculpture.  It consists of very small particles of precious metals (such as silver, gold or platinum) mixed with an organic binder and water.  Metal clay can be shaped just like any soft clay, by hand or using moulds.  After drying, it can be fired in a variety of ways including in a kiln, with a handheld gas torch or on a gas stove.  The binder burns away, leaving the pure, sintered metal. Six sessions.

$280 plus material fee $115 ($35 for personal tool kit which can be reused and $80 for PMC3 – 50g pack); materials fee paid directly to instructor.

ArtStart is a great way to introduce art to your preschool aged child and help him/her develop a lifelong love of art.  Your child will be introduced to many different forms of arts and crafts from sculpture and papier-mâché to collages and decorating cookies.  These classes are designed with the child in mind keeping our classes fun, creative and playful.  The teacher will work with each child individually with his/her level of ability.  The emphasis is on the “process” and not the “product”.  This means your child will be taught open-ended forms of art and not taught how to “copy” a specific example.  This is the main key in teaching art.  This opens the door to true creativity and your child’s petit Picasso within.
