Okay. The most amazing adventure of a 10-Day Art Retreat with the Washington Society of Landscape Painters (WSLP -- I'm a member of this great group) -- was painting this scene right here. Cascata delle Marmore is in Terni, Italy (Umbria) and is the largest manmade waterfall in the World. This engineering feat was created by the Romans in 271 BC and it is nothing short of spectacular.
The falls only run at full force for a couple hours a day -- varying with the season. When we were there in September 2025, they were running from 11am-1pm. The bus dropped us off early so we could pick our spots to set up easels. I picked a perch above the walkway -- probably not a designated spot for standing but giving me an incredible view. Then too -- I had the fun of watching Trisha Adams and Vicki Blum painting their versions right in front of me.
A bonus to my perch was being a little farther away from the water and the mist that was flying everywhere. Too much water in the air will eventually make the paint -- even oils -- have a hard time sticking. Mine did.
Experiencing these falls was just unbelievable. Experiencing it with artist friends -- at our easels -- was even better than that.
