La Te Da

Each December and January, I embark on two separate trips to Key West (Florida) to paint and relish in the freedom to be out and about. We stay in the relatively quieter Southernmost end -- but there is still plenty of night life. The town sparkles all day -- although even more at night.

Painting in Progress

I picked a terrific spot to paint -- tucked into the alcove of a closed for the night shop -- with a great view of La Te Da across the street. And, no parking zones were on both sides of the street ... so a blocked view would only be temporary. It was such a treat to paint there in the warm night air, twinkling lights and sounds of the concert across the street.

While it looked surprisingly good (you never know with nocturnes) that night, there were changes to made in the studio. The main change was to shift the colors of the building in the shadows to the gorgeous purple blue hues it had. My palette that night was missing a couple of useful colors.

In revisiting it in the studio, I relied on another painting of mine as my cue for values and color. It's a favorite as well ... so a great inspiration.
